Google Ads low search volume

Low search volume means the keyword has very little or no search history on Google, so it is switched off until searches appear. Bids, ads and Quality Score do not change the status. Add broader match types and more common phrasings that people actually search.

Why it happens

The keywords are too specific

  1. The keywords are too specific

Long, niche phrasings, model numbers or local spellings that almost nobody types.

  2. Exact match on rare terms

Exact match cannot borrow volume from close variants the way phrase and broad match can.

  3. The market is genuinely small

A narrow B2B niche or a new product category with little search demand yet.

How to fix it, step by step

  1. Find the inactive keywords

Open Campaigns, then Audiences, keywords and content, then Search keywords. Filter the Status column for Low search volume.

  2. Add broader versions

Add the core phrase in phrase match or broad match, and shorter, more common wordings. Keep the long ones; they reactivate when volume appears.

  3. Check search demand

Use Tools, then Planning, then Keyword Planner to see which phrasings people actually search.

  4. Wait for the recheck

Google rechecks the status regularly, so give it about a week before judging the new keywords.

Or let Sprites fix it

Sprites finds the ad groups that cannot serve and adds the broader keywords that will.

What Sprites does

  • Reads impressions by keyword and match type across the account, and finds ad groups where no keyword is getting any.
  • Researches the phrasings people actually search for your product.
  • Adds broader keywords with the match types and bids you approve, skipping any that already exist.

What it doesn't do

  • It cannot create search demand where nobody searches.

Questions

What does low search volume mean in Google Ads?

The keyword has very little or no search history on Google, so it is inactive and will not trigger ads until searches increase.

Will raising the bid fix low search volume?

No. The status is unrelated to bid, Quality Score and ad copy. Only search volume changes it.

Should I delete low search volume keywords?

No need. They cost nothing while inactive and reactivate on their own if searches pick up. Add broader keywords next to them.

How long until a low search volume keyword becomes active?

Google rechecks regularly, so expect around a week once real searches appear.
