Inside Captions' Ads Strategy: The AI Video Company That Took AI Faces Out of Its Ads

Captions is made by a company that builds AI actors. Its ads don't use them.

In September 2025 Captions ran 39 Meta ads where the person talking was an AI twin made from a selfie. They were gone within weeks. None of the 512 ads Captions has launched since mentions an avatar, an AI twin or a selfie.

Captions has 176 Meta ads live as of 13 October 2026. The live ones put real people on camera: a before-and-after of someone's own footage, or a creator saying how long editing used to take. The AI video company sells AI that edits humans. The AI that replaces them is left to Google search.

Captions ads: key findings

  • 176 Meta ads live as of 13 October 2026, down from 278 on 17 September
  • 568 of 576 Meta ads are video. 565 send you to the iPhone App Store
  • The AI-twin campaign: 39 ads in autumn 2025, median life 16 days. 0 of 512 ads since mention avatars
  • One sentence, 7 languages: "Watch as AI edits your videos for you, only on Captions." runs on 323 ads
  • 56 creator pages have run 82 Captions ads. The median page has 7 likes
  • Creators made 48% of October launches, up from 5% in August
  • In October Captions' own page launched 2 English ads. Creators launched 31
  • 0 Meta ads go to Google Play and 0 carry a promo code. Meta buys iPhone installs, and nothing else
  • The affiliate program now sits under the Mirage name, at 20% per sale for a year. Creators in the ads get a flat fee
  • Half of EU reach lands in Spain. The audience is 25-34 and 55% male, the most balanced of any AI brand we've broken down
  • The parent brand, Mirage, appears in 1 of 58 Google ads and in no Meta ad copy

How Captions' funnel is wired

Every choice in this account keeps one number clean: what an iPhone install cohort is worth.

One store, one listing, one platform

565 of 576 Meta ads link to one App Store listing, with no parameters. 0 go to Google Play. The 11 web ads that pointed at captions.ai ran in May and June 2026, then stopped. Captions' own pricing page says its prices "reflect iOS plans only".

The web editor is sold somewhere else entirely. Google carries 58 text ads, all to captions.ai, with display paths cut by job:

Display pathWhat it sells
/ai/editThe AI editor
/ai/captionsSubtitles, the original product
/ai/avatarAI avatars, the product the feed no longer shows
/mirage/aiThe parent brand, once
/captions/pricingSomeone already comparing plans

Each channel sells one platform. So each channel's cohort reads cleanly, with no cross-platform leakage to explain away.

Two incentive systems, never mixed

All but 2 creator ads use the same bare App Store link (the other 2 use the bare homepage). No promo code, no affiliate tag. The creator gets paid for the video, not the install. There's no way to pay them per install, because nothing in the link says who sent it.

Commission lives on a separate track. The affiliate program now runs under the Mirage name, at 20% per sale for a year. The ad creators are hired hands. The affiliates are a channel. Captions never asks one person to be both.

Portuguese started with 6 launches in February 2026, jumped to 16 in April, and has run every month since. That's Brazil, and it's the second-biggest language on the account.

In the EU the targeting looks like Germany first: the ads with a published audience target Germany 11 times, France 7 and Spain 6. Delivery says otherwise. Spain took 2.46M of 4.97M EU reach. Half.

The audience is 25-34 (45%) and 55% male. Granola's EU reach is 83% male, Wispr Flow's 74%. Captions' buyer isn't an operator in back-to-back meetings. It's someone who films themselves.

A cohort machine for a cohort lender

Mirage's $75M came from General Catalyst's Customer Value Fund. That fund lends against customer-acquisition cohorts and gets repaid out of their revenue.

Now read the account again. One store. One listing. One platform per channel. Creators on flat fees. No codes muddying the source. Launches in batches: 192 in August, 151 in September.

That's our inference, not something Captions has said. But if someone lent you money against each month's install cohort, this is exactly the account you'd build to show them the payback.

How Captions pays creators

Captions runs creators like a casting call, not a roster. One video each, briefed in batches, all pointed at the App Store.

The creators are the customers

Look at the names. A "UGC Creator" in the page title. Kruse Creative. SH Creative Dept. Cozy Media Agency. Faw Studios. Filmmakers, photographers, small video shops.

These are the people who buy Captions. The ad is a video editor telling other video editors how long editing used to take. 15 of the ads carry an #ad tag.

Wide, then narrow

Granola keeps 26 creators and runs each video as about 9 ads. Captions runs 56 creators at 1 or 2 ads each and keeps launching new faces.

Same tracking choice, though. Neither puts a creator link in the ad. Both pay for the video, not the install.

The money behind it

In March 2026 Mirage, the company behind Captions, raised $75M from General Catalyst's Customer Value Fund. That fund exists to finance customer acquisition against revenue. The ad budget is the point of the round.

Mirage Studio sells AI actors to brands for UGC-style ads. Captions pays humans for its own.

Part 1: The AI faces came and went

Autumn 2025: the product was the ad

The idea makes sense on paper. You sell AI video, so you make the ad with AI video. The ad is the demo.

That's what Captions did in September 2025. A man talks to camera. A small inset shows a still photo of him. A label says "Real Bennett". Another says "you don't need a film studio, you need a selfie". One ad is shot in front of a neon sign that says Mirage, and the caption reads "I'm not actually in" this video.

The only Meta creative with the Mirage name on screen. A generated presenter telling you he isn't really there. Autumn 2025.

39 ads. 37 different creatives. All English. Launched between 16 September and 24 October 2025.

The median one lasted 16 days. The longest lasted 33. By 5 November all of them were off.

Then: real people, forever

Thirty days after launch, 8% of the AI-twin ads were still running. For the "Watch as AI edits" ads it was 76%, and for creator ads 92%.

The AI-twin ads that stopped lasted 16 days. The editing ads that stopped lasted 28. And nothing replaced them. Not in the copy, not in the headlines. 512 ads since. Zero avatars.

That's the part I didn't expect. Captions' Meta page is literally called "Captions: For Talking Videos". The company behind it builds the models that generate talking people. And its feed ads went back to people talking.

Why it flipped

Look at who the ads are for. 52 of the 82 creator ads name "AI Edit". 45 talk about hours, minutes or time. 15 say "consistency" or "posting". The buyer is someone who already films themselves and hates the timeline.

Show that person an AI clone of a stranger and you're pitching their replacement. Show them a before-and-after of their own kind of video, cut tighter with captions and B-roll, and you're pitching their Tuesday.

So the brand ads became before-and-afters. Two panels at the top, "before" and "after", "antes" and "después". A real person in the middle, lav mic clipped on, saying the hook. The edit is the demo. The face stays human.

Captions Meta ad: a man with glasses talking to camera, with before and after panels of the same video above him and the word VIRAL on screen.
The format that replaced the AI twin. Before, after, and the same guy, live on 13 October 2026.

Part 2: One sentence, seven languages

Translate the line, recast the face

Captions writes very little copy. 85 distinct bodies across 576 ads, and most of those belong to creators. The brand page mostly says one thing.

Portuguese ("Assista enquanto a IA edita seus vídeos para você")75

The headline follows the same pattern. "Create with Captions AI" on 249 ads, then "Crie com o Captions AI", "Erstellen mit Captions AI", "Créer avec Captions AI", "Crea con Captions AI".

The videos are not dubbed English ads. The Spanish ones are shot by a Spanish-speaking presenter. The Hebrew ones have a Hebrew-speaking presenter with Hebrew captions burned in. One sentence, one format, a different person per market.

"Pasen de esto." The same before-and-after format, shot natively in Spanish. Live 13 October 2026.

Captions' own page now runs the localized ads. English belongs to creators. Of the live English-language ads, 39 come from creators and 24 from the brand.

Spanish is the second-biggest live language with 30 ads. Hebrew has 11 live. German has 4.

Part 3: 56 creators, one ad each

Wide and shallow

August 202619295%
September 20261513322%

Every creator ad is a partnership ad. The creator's name sits on top, and all 82 run with Captions as the paid partner. The handle in the copy is @getcaptionsapp.

The interesting number is the spread. 56 creator pages for 82 ads. The median creator runs one. Granola, by comparison, put 595 ads on 26 creator pages and ran one creator's video on 32 ads.

Granola found faces and scaled them. Captions is still auditioning. It buys one video from a lot of people and waits to see which one holds.

Nobody here has an audience

23 of the 56 creator pages have zero Facebook likes. 48 have fewer than 1,000. The median is 7. The biggest is Doddsp at 32,643.

Joe Parpheniuk's page has 28 likes. His ad, live since 7 October:

"Building a 6 figure UGC business in under a year taught me one thing fast. Your content is your resume and people are judging it before they ever reach out or respond to your pitch."

Captions creator ad: a man in a white kitchen gesturing at the camera, caption reading 6 figures, no editor, here's how.
Joe Parpheniuk, 28 page likes. "6 figures. No editor. Here's how." Live 13 October 2026.

It's a UGC creator selling a tool for UGC creators. The pitch isn't "save time". It's "land clients". Another creator, Jacinthe Photo & Media, 72 likes: "I've got ideas. I don't have all day to edit them."

The creators write their own copy. 57 distinct bodies across 82 ads. 14 carry "#ad". And they talk longer. Creator videos run a median 39 seconds. Brand videos run 23.

Part 4: Meta sells the app, Google sells the browser

565 of 576 ads go to the App Store

Every live Meta ad points at the same link: the Captions app on the iPhone App Store. The button, when there is one, says "Install Now". No Android link anywhere.

Captions tested the web once on Meta. 11 ads in May and June 2026 sent people to captions.ai with a "Sign Up" button. All 11 are off, the last one since early August. Every ad launched after June goes to the App Store.

Google is where the web editor lives

Google is the opposite. 58 Google ads, all text, all to captions.ai. 21 ran in October, 12 of them in the US only.

9 of the 21 October Google ads sell the browser: "No Download Required", "Captions AI Is Now On Web", "Works on Mac, PC and Chromebook". The search ad is for the person at a laptop. The feed ad is for the person holding a phone.

And the generation product lives here. "Generate Avatar Videos. Show up on camera without recording every time." "From Prompt To AI Video." "AI Actors that actually look and feel real." Someone typing "AI avatar" into Google wants a fake person. Someone scrolling Reels doesn't.

Even on Google it's shrinking. Before October, 15 of 37 Google ads pitched generated people. In October, 5 of 21.

Mirage, barely

The company behind Captions is Mirage. The footer of the pricing page links to "About Mirage", and the legal pages live on mirage.app. One Google ad bids on it: "Mirage AI Official Site - AI Video Editor By Mirage". On Meta, the name is in no ad copy at all. The only time it shows up is a neon sign behind an AI presenter in 2025.

The feed gets the app name people already have on their phone. The parent brand only shows up where someone searches for it.

No price in the ads

No Meta ad names a price. Google ads say "Try Free" and "Trusted By 20M+ Creators". The pricing page lists Max at $24.99 a month and Frontier at $69.99 a month on iOS.

Part 5: Bursts, then a cull

For most of 2026 Captions barely advertised on Meta. 87 launches from January to July. Then August.

DateLive Meta ads
4 September 2026243
17 September 2026278
13 October 2026176

192 launches in August, 151 in September, 67 in the first 13 days of October. They ship in bursts: 103 in the week of 24 August, 100 in the week of 14 September.

And they cut hard. The median ad that's been switched off lasted 18 days. All 67 October launches are live, so 38% of what's running is under two weeks old. The live count fell 37% in a month while launches kept coming.

Placements moved too. 106 of August's 192 launches ran on Audience Network. None of October's 67 do. Every October launch runs on Threads.

What actually makes this work

Captions' buyer is a person who films themselves. That person wants to look better, not to disappear. The one time the ads showed a generated face, they died in 16 days. The "Watch as AI edits" line, on real faces, has run since March 2025.

So the feed gets humans: a localized presenter on the brand page, a 7-like creator in English, and the App Store button. Search gets the avatars and the web editor, because that's what people type. The model company's newest product lives where intent already exists, and the old product pays for the feed.

An AI video company proving its point with real people. That's the read.

Break down your own market

Every Captions ad is on the Captions ads page and in the Captions ads library. Compare it with Granola's 26 creators, Wispr Flow and Viktor's 263 bodies. The rest are in the ads library. If you want the same read on your own competitors, Sprites does it for any advertiser, or start here.

Frequently asked questions

How many Meta ads is Captions running?

Captions had 176 Meta ads live on 13 October 2026, down from 278 on 17 September and 243 on 4 September. It launched 410 Meta ads between 1 August and 13 October 2026, against 87 in the first seven months of the year. 568 of its 576 Meta ads are video.

Does Captions use AI avatars in its own ads?

Not any more. In autumn 2025 Captions ran 39 Meta ads with the line "Create endless polished videos from just one selfie", showing AI twins generated from a photo. Their median life was 16 days and all were off by 5 November 2025. None of the 512 Meta ads launched since mentions an avatar, an AI twin or a selfie.

What does Captions' ad copy say?

Mostly one sentence: "Watch as AI edits your videos for you, only on Captions." It runs on 323 Meta ads in seven languages: English (116), Portuguese (75), Spanish (60), German (24), French (23), Hebrew (22) and Italian (3). The top headline is "Create with Captions AI" on 249 ads.

Does Captions pay creators or run an affiliate program?

Captions runs Meta partnership ads with 56 creator pages, one video each, briefed in batches of 15 to 18 creators on a single day. All of them link to the same App Store listing with no tracking parameters, so creators are paid for the video rather than per install. Commission runs on a separate track: an affiliate program under the Mirage name pays 20% per sale for one year. Mirage has hired an in-house influencer marketing team in New York.

Does Captions use creators or influencers for ads?

Yes. 56 creator pages have run 82 Captions partnership ads, and creators made 48% of October 2026 launches, up from 5% in August. Most are tiny: the median creator page has 7 Facebook likes and runs one ad. In October, 31 of Captions' 33 new English-language Meta ads came from creators.

Where do Captions' ads send people?

On Meta, 565 of 576 ads go to the Captions app on the iPhone App Store with an Install Now button. A test of 11 web ads to captions.ai in May and June 2026 was switched off. On Google, all 58 text ads go to captions.ai, and 9 of the 21 running in October sell the web editor with lines like "No Download Required".

Is Captions the same company as Mirage?

Yes. Captions is made by Mirage, and the captions.ai pricing page links to About Mirage and to legal pages on mirage.app. The Mirage name appears in 1 of Captions' 58 Google ads and in no Meta ad copy.

How much does Captions cost?

Captions' pricing page lists Max at $24.99 a month and Frontier at $69.99 a month for iOS, with higher Frontier tiers and custom Enterprise pricing, plus a free version with limited features. No Meta ad names a price; Google ads say Try Free.

Who do Captions' Meta ads reach?

Captions' Meta ads go almost entirely to the iPhone App Store, with no Android link. In the EU, half of reach lands in Spain even though more ads target Germany. The audience is mostly 25-34 (45%) and 55% male, much more balanced than meeting tools like Granola (83% male).
